How you approach the work

When starting a new skill or tackling a vocal challenge, I’m typically:*

Technical-first. Build the skill through exercises first, then apply it to music. Get the technique working before we put it in a song.

Mostly technical. Technique first, but I use songs for context and motivation when it helps.

Mostly expression. Start with the music, but isolate technique when specific issues arise.

Expression-first. Dive into the music and solve technical problems as they come up. The song tells us what to work on.

My orientation toward student progress focuses on:*

Long-term. Patient, multi-year development. Real vocal change takes time — trust the process.

Mostly long-term. Building for the future, but I create milestone wins along the way.

Mostly short-term. Results-oriented, with an eye toward sustainability.

Short-term. Immediate, tangible improvement. Every lesson should show progress.

When I learn something new myself, my natural preference is:*

Understanding-first. I want to know why before I try. Once I understand it, I can do it.

Mostly understanding. I like some explanation first, but I’m willing to experiment.

Mostly experiencing. I’d rather try first, then understand what happened.

Experiencing-first. I learn by doing, then make sense of it afterward. Let me feel it first.

My teaching style moment-to-moment is:*

Prescriptive. I diagnose and prescribe. “Your soft palate is low — do this.” Clear, direct instructions.

Mostly prescriptive. Mostly direct solutions, occasionally facilitating discovery for ownership.

Mostly exploratory. Guide discovery most of the time, but give direct answers when efficiency matters.

Exploratory. I create experiments; the student discovers. “Try five ways — what feels most free?”

My typical lesson format is:*

Consistent routine. Every lesson follows the same structure. Students know what to expect.

Mostly routine. A general structure, with flexibility for special circumstances.

Mostly responsive. Loose structure, but with a consistent opening or closing ritual.

Responsive to the moment. “What does your voice need today?” No two lessons look the same.

The balance of control in my teaching is:*

Teacher-directed. I determine what we work on. “Based on what I’m hearing, here’s our focus.”

Mostly teacher-led. I set priorities but bring in student input on repertoire and goals.

Mostly collaborative. I offer expertise, the student voices preferences; we negotiate together.

Student-directed. The student drives goals and direction; I support their agenda.

Communication & Feedback

How you talk to students in the room

When a student finishes a phrase, my first instinct is to notice:*

Problems first. What needs fixing. “That was breathy and the vowel spread.” Progress = eliminating errors.

Mostly problems. Problems first, but I consciously acknowledge wins too.

Mostly strengths. Strengths first, then address issues. “Great! And here’s what to refine…”

Strengths first. What worked. “That phrase had beautiful connection — what did you feel?” Progress = expanding what works.

When giving corrective feedback, I tend to be:*

Direct. “That was flat and tight.” Clarity matters; students can handle honesty.

Mostly direct. Mostly direct, but I soften for sensitive students or situations.

Mostly diplomatic. I generally frame corrections positively, but can be direct when needed.

Cushioned / diplomatic. “I’m hearing some pitch variation — let’s explore what helps.” Emotional safety enables learning.

My primary teaching language is:*

Analytical. Science and biomechanics. “Engage your cricothyroid to stretch the folds.” Understanding drives change.

Mostly analytical. Mostly anatomy and science, but imagery for quick fixes when it helps.

Mostly somatic. Mostly sensation-based, but I explain mechanics for students who need it.

Somatic / imagery. Metaphors and body sensations. “Imagine warm honey flowing…” Feeling drives change.

When a student struggles or gets frustrated, I usually…*

How do you feel about being observed or recorded while teaching?*

Love it. I actively want eyes on my teaching — feedback makes me better.

A quick reminder before you fill this in

When we ask for your availability, we’re asking you to hold these times consistently across a full term – August to December, then again January to May. So please add the hours you can commit to week after week, not just the ones that happen to be free right now.

The consistency is what makes the work possible:

The same slot, same teacher, every week is what lets a student settle in and take real risks. That relationship is the whole thing.
Voice progress is cumulative. Building on last week’s lesson is how the growth actually happens.
Families plan their term around a fixed time, so a stable slot protects every student on your roster.
The hardest slot to move is the one that hasn’t moved yet. Once the first change goes through, the next feels easier, and the schedule slowly loosens for everyone.

Life happens, and the occasional adjustment is always fine.
